Monitor / Defibrillator

Monitor/ Defibrillator combinations, units such as Philips and Physio-Control Lifepak, can be found in many settings in Healthcare. They are used to monitor the patient’s ECG. They can be used to apply an electrical stimulation to the hear,t should there be issues with the proper function of this vital organ. Units vary in size and configuration; however, most are found to have ECG monitoring capability, energy delivery components, and a built-in recorder for recording the process. Some monitor defibrillator and Lifepak defibrillator units have additional options such as NIBP, External Pacing, Spo2, and ETCO2. Some units also have built-in programs for determining the need of Energy Delivery, commonly referred to as AED. These programs determine the need for delivery of the energy based upon the patient ECG. These units are used by EMT’s, Emergency Rooms, and will also be found in ICU’s and General Care floors. The defibrillator portion can be found to have two different types of energy delivery. They will be either Monophasic of Biphasic, which refers to the wave shape of the delivered energy.
